Using your li ion stock mobile phone in G or Dual Mode drains the battery much quicker than just GSM mode. Somewhere in the manual for your phone will be listed the battery times separately for GSM and 3G. On modern mobile phones, the GSM only life-cycle can be up to 50% more efficient.
Nonetheless, the Volt is not something in GM's immediate plans. The idea for the Volt would require that a cost efficient 400-lb Lithium mines Ontario-ion battery be found. Lithium-ion batteries of this size are not currently available. Further advances in battery technology would be required to allow GM to consider making the Volt a production car. These are enhancements that could occur in as little as a year, or as many as 20 years. GM has stated that they feel the technology is almost there, yet a vehicle like this is probably about a decade away.
The mating process between the two engines can be in series or in parallel. When the two powertrains are mated in series, only one of the motors controls the cars movement. The other one simply assists the first, dominant engine. This occurs most often in mild or assist hybrids. The Saturn Vue Green Line Belt Alternator System (BAS) is a good example. You may also "top-off" your batteries by plopping them onto (or turning on) the charger for a few minutes each month. Though you don't need to store li-ion batteries fully charged, giving them a little juice while dormant can keep them feeling good and strong.
The odds that you will using the Lithium-Ion batteries are 99% ( that's if you are using the new breeds of laptops :) ). Just check the abbreviation that says LION or Li-Ion on your laptop battery label. There are still a few laptops that are using Ni-MH batteries these days and you might want to check with the manufacturer whether you can do an upgrade from Ni-MH to Li-Ion. Using unapproved batteries could led to dire consequences .... so do be very careful on this. If you have a higher budget you might want to check out SMART batteries. It has a power management circuitry and it will indicate to the user what is the current condition of the battery.
